Week 12

This week is the last week of the course, below is a reflection of how I think I did in the course:

Over these few months of this course, I was able to learn from scratch a new European language- German. I chose to learn German because I was fascinated by its history and also because I have family members living in Germany, so I felt intrigued by the language.

German to me right now is still quite unfamiliar as throughout these weeks, I have only learnt various simple vocabulary and simple grammar. In the future, I hope to further my learning by progressing and being able to make sentences from the vocabulary I learnt. Looking back at the targets I set myself in week 1, I found that I have been able to achieve most of them, such as being able to introduce myself, identifying animals, order food, understand basic phrases and describe my family members. However, I did not achieve all of my targets as I still cannot describe my daily routine, pronounce the German alphabet or hold a basic conversation. In fact, I found speaking German to be especially arduous as the pronunciation of German differs greatly from English, so looking back, I should have allocated time for myself to practice speaking German.

In terms of self-studying, I think that at sometimes I was great at it but other times I would be off-task. For example, if I had a lot of work to complete that week, sometimes I would not use my time well to focus on learning my language. I feel that I was usually quite organised as I was able to complete my weekly objectives. However, I had trouble completing the final tasks I set myself as I usually ran out of time to complete them in the lesson so most of it is unfinished.

Regarding the resources I used to learn German, I used Duolingo, Quizlet and languages online, but I mostly used Quizlet as it was the easiest to find resources. I did not like using Duolingo as much as I did for learning other languages because I found it quite conforming as I could not exactly choose which topics I could learn but had to stick to the Duolingo tree. However, I like Duolingo because it provides me with an opportunity to actually put the vocabulary I learnt in sentences and it also has helpful listening and speaking exercises.
